What's in a name?

So I’ve been calling this project gather, but I may have to find a new name for it.

For a long time I didn’t have a name for this, let alone a good one. After a while I started to try and come up with something, I started with sort of code-names before trying to just find one that could work long term and that I could build a brand on. Eventually I settled on Gather. I want my app to help people gather around. It’s short, catchy, easy to remember and didn’t sound like anything else. There’s only one problem: it’s not as unique as I thought it was. If you wan’t your app to succeed I’m told that it should be easy to remember but not accidentally drive potential users to other apps. So it was time to look at the market.

Gather. Gathr. they’re both out there. Gather is an app on the google play store, and Gathr has a presence on both android and iOS. They are also similar efforts to my own; each connecting people in their own special way. I don’t want to be a clone of some other program.

I’m mainly just trying to learn how to develop an app, so it really shouldn't matter all that much, but I wan’t to make sure that I’m doing whatever I do right. If I can have this project succeed in the market as well as in adding abilities to my repertoire then all the better.

After some more brainstorming I have a few other ideas that I may be able to use, but I don’t know if I even need to change it just yet. In the meantime I think that I’ll just keep my alternatives to myself.
